पुरुषोत्तमयोग

उस वृक्ष की शाखाएँ ऊपर और नीचे सब ओर फैली हुई हैं, जो तीनों गुणों से पोषित हैं और जिनकी कोपलें विषय-भोग हैं। नीचे की ओर उसके मूल भी फैले हुए हैं, जो मनुष्य लोक में कर्म के बंधन उत्पन्न करते हैं।

Its branches spread above and below, nourished by the three gunas, with the sense objects as their buds. Its roots extend downward into the world of men, bound by actions.

इस अश्वत्थ वृक्ष का न तो वास्तविक रूप यहाँ दिखाई देता है, न इसका अंत है, न आदि है और न ही आधार। इस सुदृढ़ जड़ों वाले अश्वत्थ वृक्ष को असंग रूपी दृढ़ शस्त्र से काटना चाहिए।

The real form of this tree is not perceived here in this world, neither its end nor its beginning, nor its foundation. Having cut down this firmly-rooted ashvattha tree with the strong axe of non-attachment.

उसके बाद उस परम पद की खोज करनी चाहिए, जहाँ पहुँचकर मनुष्य फिर लौटकर नहीं आता। उसी आदि पुरुष की शरण लेनी चाहिए, जिससे यह प्राचीन प्रवृत्ति प्रवाहित हुई है।

Thereafter that supreme state should be sought, having reached which one never returns. I take refuge in that primeval Person from whom this ancient creation has emanated.

श्री भगवान बोले - जो मान और मोह से रहित हैं, संग के दोष को जीत चुके हैं, अध्यात्म में नित्य स्थित हैं, कामनाओं से निवृत्त हैं, सुख-दुःख नामक द्वन्द्वों से मुक्त हैं, वे अज्ञानरहित पुरुष उस अविनाशी परमपद को प्राप्त होते हैं।

The Blessed Lord said: Those who are free from pride and delusion, who have conquered the evil of attachment, who constantly dwell in the Self, whose desires have turned away, who are liberated from the dualities known as pleasure and pain—such undeluded persons reach that imperishable state.

न तो सूर्य उसे प्रकाशित करता है, न चन्द्रमा और न अग्नि ही। जहाँ जाकर योगीजन वापस नहीं लौटते, वह मेरा परम धाम है।

Neither the sun nor the moon nor fire can illuminate that supreme abode of Mine, having reached which, beings never return to this material world.

भगवान ने कहा - इस जीव लोक में जो जीव रूप में स्थित है, वह मेरा ही सनातन अंश है। वह प्रकृति में स्थित मन सहित छहों इन्द्रियों को आकर्षित करता है।

The Blessed Lord said: An eternal fragment of My very Self becomes the individual soul in the world of living beings, and draws to itself the six senses including the mind, which abide in material nature.

श्रीभगवान् बोले— जब जीवात्मा जो शरीर को प्राप्त करता है और जिससे निकलता है, तो इन इन्द्रियों को लेकर चला जाता है, जैसे वायु गन्धों को उनके स्थान से ले जाता है।

The Supreme Lord said: When the embodied soul acquires a body and when it gives up that body, it takes these senses along with it as the wind carries fragrances from their source.

श्रीभगवान् बोले - कान, आंख, स्पर्श की इन्द्रिय, जीभ और नाक तथा मन को आधार बनाकर यह जीव विषयों का सेवन करता है।

The Supreme Lord said: Presiding over the ear, eye, touch, taste and smell, as well as the mind, the embodied soul enjoys the objects of the senses.

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं - इस जीवात्मा को जब वह शरीर से निकलती है, स्थित रहती है अथवा विषयों को भोगती है और गुणों से युक्त होकर कार्य करती है, तो मूढ़ लोग इसे नहीं देखते, परन्तु ज्ञानरूपी नेत्रों वाले इसे देखते हैं।

The Supreme Lord said: The deluded do not perceive the soul departing from the body, nor remaining in it, nor enjoying sense objects in association with the gunas. But those who possess the eye of knowledge can see it.

प्रयत्न करने वाले योगीजन इस आत्मा को अपने हृदय में स्थित देखते हैं, परन्तु जिनका अन्तःकरण शुद्ध नहीं है, वे अचेतन मनुष्य यत्न करते हुए भी इसे नहीं देख सकते।

The yogis who strive can perceive this soul dwelling within themselves, but those whose minds are not purified, though they strive, cannot perceive it due to lack of understanding.

जो तेज सूर्य में स्थित होकर समस्त जगत को प्रकाशित करता है, जो तेज चन्द्रमा में है और जो अग्नि में है, उस तेज को तुम मेरा ही जान।

The light that resides in the sun and illuminates the entire world, that which is in the moon and in fire - know that radiance to be Mine.

मैं पृथ्वी में प्रवेश करके अपनी शक्ति से सभी प्राणियों को धारण करता हूँ और रसमय चन्द्रमा बनकर सभी औषधियों का पोषण करता हूँ।

I enter the earth and support all living beings with My energy, and becoming the nourishing moon, I foster all plants and herbs.

मैं वैश्वानर (पाचक अग्नि) बनकर प्राणियों के शरीर में स्थित होकर प्राण और अपान वायु के साथ मिलकर चार प्रकार के अन्न को पचाता हूँ।

I, becoming the digestive fire (Vaishvanara) in the bodies of living beings, and united with the life-breath (prana) and downward breath (apana), digest the four kinds of food.

मैं सभी के हृदय में स्थित हूँ और मुझसे ही स्मृति, ज्ञान और विस्मृति होती है। सभी वेदों द्वारा मैं ही जानने योग्य हूँ, मैं ही वेदान्त का रचयिता हूँ और वेदों को जानने वाला भी मैं ही हूँ।

I am seated in the hearts of all beings. From Me come memory, knowledge, and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I alone am to be known. Indeed, I am the author of Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas.

भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण बोले - इस जगत् में दो प्रकार के पुरुष हैं - एक क्षर और दूसरा अक्षर। इनमें सम्पूर्ण भूत प्राणी क्षर कहे जाते हैं और जो अपरिवर्तनीय है, वह अक्षर कहलाता है।

The Supreme Lord said: There are two kinds of beings in this world - the fallible (kshara) and the infallible (akshara). All living entities are fallible, while the unchanging Brahman is called infallible.

श्रीभगवान् ने कहा - परन्तु इन दोनों से उत्तम अन्य पुरुष है, जो परमात्मा नाम से कहा जाता है और जो तीनों लोकों में प्रवेश करके सबको धारण करने वाला अविनाशी परमेश्वर है।

The Supreme Lord said: But there is another, the Supreme Person, who is called the Supreme Soul, who as the imperishable Lord enters the three worlds and sustains them all.

क्योंकि मैं क्षर से अतीत हूँ और अक्षर से भी उत्तम हूँ, इसलिए मैं लोक में और वेद में पुरुषोत्तम के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हूँ।

Because I transcend the perishable and am even superior to the imperishable, I am celebrated in the world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Person (Purushottama).

जो व्यक्ति मुझे इस प्रकार निर्विकार बुद्धि से पुरुषोत्तम जानता है, वह सर्वज्ञ है और हे भरतवंशी! सम्पूर्ण भाव से मेरी भक्ति करता है।

One who thus knows Me without delusion as the Supreme Person, such a person knows all and worships Me with their whole being, O descendant of Bharata.

श्री भगवान बोले - हे निष्पाप अर्जुन! इस प्रकार यह अत्यन्त गुह्य शास्त्र मैंने तुझसे कहा है। हे भारत! इसे जानकर मनुष्य ज्ञानवान और कृतकृत्य हो जाता है।

The Supreme Lord said: Thus this most confidential knowledge has been revealed by Me to you, O sinless one. By understanding this, one becomes wise and achieves the ultimate purpose of life, O Bharata.
